Franschhoek About Franschhoek
Agusta

Agusta wines are made at the Grande Provence Estate in the historical town of Franschhoek, which lies some 60km east of Cape Town.

Franschhoek, meaning French Corner, was so named after the French Huguenots, who settled here in the 1680s. The 120 hectare wine estate is owned by Count Riccardo Agusta of Italy and is planted with Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet and Merlot.

An extensive planting programme is in progress with Shiraz, Cabernet Franc and some Viognier vineyards also being planted.

Boschendal

Boschendal is one of the oldest wine producers in the New World with a French viticultural heritage dating back to 1685.

The farm "Bossendaal" (wood and dale) was granted in 1685 to French émigré Jean le Long by the governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel. The historic Boschendal Manor House stands as a monument to this rich cultural tradition.

Today the vineyards have been replanted with noble varietals which produce highly priced wines characterized by their elegance and complexity.

They brought with them a history of viticultural expertise, which is still practised in this valley today.

Today Chamonix is known for its award-winning wines, German-styled Schnapps, Grappa and Spring Water, which can be tasted all year round, seven days a week.

Steeped in the traditions of the French Huguenots, the first vines were planted in 1694.

Under the guidance of Anthonij Rupert, L'Ormarins has been awarded more than 70 trophies and 450 medals for its quality wines and is still one of the top wine producing estates in the country.

The cool high sloes create the ideal climate for the growing of red wine. The cellar specialises in Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot although small amounts of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are available.

Fine dining is the hallmark of La Couronne's a la carte restaurant. Listen to the classical piano while enjoying the views from the lounge.
