There are 11 officially recognised languages, most of them indigenous to South Africa: Afrikaans, English, Ndebele, Northern Sotho, Southern Sotho, Swati, Tsonga, Tswana, Venda, Xhosa and Zulu.
English is the language of administration and is spoken throughout the country. Afrikaans is spoken by all races and ethnic groups in South Africa. The language has its roots in seventeenth century Dutch but it has been influenced by many languages including: English, Malay, German, Portuguese, French and some African languages. Afrikaans is also spoken in the Republic of Namibia. Below are a few Afrikaans words and phrases wich are often used.
