31st Nederburg Auction 9. April 2005
Nederburg, home to South Africa’s most honoured wines, annually hosts the internationally acclaimed Nederburg Auction. This event ranks as one of the top five wine auctions in the world and serves as a valuable showcase for South African winemakers and their products.
The Nederburg Auction is all about the business and pleasure of wine. The very essence of the event lies in its array of 147 fine wines from 92 wine producers, wine estates, co-operatives and wholesalers.
From a business perspective the Nederburg Auction has realized its main objectives set more than 30 years ago. It has become a benchmark for quality wine standards, helped to develop an awareness of South African wine and endured a fair distribution of rare wines.
The event also serves as a showcase for highlighting the Cape’s biodiversity, a unique and important competitive advantage for South African winemakers in global markets.
The African continent is one of the oldest geological land formations in the world, while the Cape’s floral kingdom is the richest on the planet. These features make for complex and varied wine styles that reflect their unique origins.
This focus on biodiversity provides the link in integrating the auction’s business and social components. The Biodiversity and Wine Initiative is an industry-wide programme that seeks not only to enhance sustainable winegrowing and winemaking, but also to find ways of conserving indigenous plant, insect and animal life.
In their approach to the fashion show, an annual feature of the Nederburg Auction, the country’s top designers have also taken their inspiration from the wines and floral diversity of the Cape.
