Cape Ttown holiday, tourism, safaris,
Western Cape holidays, today, night life, things to do, table mountain,
coach, jazz festival march, honeymoon, sightseeing.
"Just what the doctor ordered", says my buddy as we sit
back, each with a beer in hand and order the skipper to "head
out to sea". It's Tuesday afternoon, three o'clock. Stress
relief at 30 bucks an hour. The beer is optional.
Where in the world does therapy this good come this cheap, not
to mention the postcard-perfect backdrop of Table Mountain on a
clear day, sea spray in your face and wind in your hair. "So
what shall we do this weekend?"
This is the million dollar question when you have the luxury of
living in a city with endless opportunities – a world that
offers the whole alphabet of activities.
"I suppose it depends on our mood", comes the answer,
well-knowing what this means on a Friday after a week's slogging
– dashing for the nearest watering hole to drown our worries.
Well, there's always the option of doing a pub crawl with a difference
– trying out Cape Town's connoisseur selection of cigar bars,
"do" all the cafes and cocktail bars in the city hot spots:
Camps Bay, Long Street, Kloof Street, De Waterkant. And there's
the entertaining option of rat racing at Sheila's Outback Bar in
Century City. Of course, there's always the more civilized alternative
of exploring Cape Town's coffee route or late afternoon tee at the
Nellie (Mount Nelson Hotel) and many other charming establishments.
Or take off early and hit the road into the winelands.
While we're heading out of town, why not make a weekend of it?
There's the option of visiting a game reserve less than an hour's
drive where we can experience the big five in a malaria-free environment.
Staying closer to the sea, there's the Dassen Island Nature Reserve,
home to the world's largest colony of African penguins, or Boulders
at Simon's Town. On our way there we could make a stop-over at the
quaint fishing village of Kalk Bay, my personal favourite. On Sunday
we could go horse riding on Noordhoek beach and then return to Cape
Town via Hout Bay and the newly opened Chapman's Peak drive.
We could also go hiking on Table Mountain, Lion's Head, in Kirstenbosch
Gardens or just wander through the city to check out historical
sights.
If we had the budget we could also explore the Cape from the air
with a microlight, glider, hot-air balloon... no, a helicopter flip,
better yet, a vintage fighter jet. Or maybe go underwater for a
shark dive.
"Want another beer?"
"Huh! Oh, hmm, yes thanks."
"So which bar do you think we should go to this Friday?"
