It's late November. The Mother City has awakened from her wet and
wintry hibernation, her pulse picks up a pace, her many alluring
beaches blossom in a show of colour and curves with bronzed bodies
donning the latest trends in swimwear (or nothing at all), lazy
sundowners stretch out long into the night with cafes and restaurants
spilling over onto sidewalks, live music fills the sultry night
air and clubs pump until daybreak – and of course, you can't
find parking anywhere!
Cape Town is holiday-heaven and a global playground for thrill
seekers who want to make the most of their end-of-year break, which
is why the Mother City caters to every whim and mood.
Kicking off the summer with the mother of all bashes in an oh-so
colourful and gay manner (after all, Cape Town is Africa's gay capital),
is the Mother City Queer Project in early December. From here onwards
it's party action 24/7. Flashing neon signs along buzzing sidewalks
mark the hotspots in town flowing from the city centre along Long
and up Kloof Streets; the gay heartbeat of the city pulses strong
in De Waterkant; the suave and trendy are spotted in the bars and
cafes along the palm-lined Atlantic seaboard, from Sea Point through
to Clifton and Camps Bay.
Whether you want to line the stomach before hitting the pubs and
clubs, or whether you want to treat your palate to a specific culinary
delight, Cape Town has it all. With a choice of about 7000 restaurants,
you'll be sure to find something to satisfy your craving, or pocket
for that matter.
If a musical menu is more to your taste, you'll find a selection
of live music venues dishing up offerings ranging from African to
alternative, jazz to contemporary and anything with a beat in between.
The city also warmly embraces those cultural devotees with a slightly
more sophisticated palate. Savour world-class performances of opera,
classical music and ballet at superb theatre complexes such as Artscape,
or even at open-air venues such as Kirstenbosch Gardens or Maynardville
amphitheatre.
If gay entertainment tickles your fancy, On Broadway's shows of
satire, cabaret and drag will have you in stitches.
And those night owls who only starts feasting late into the night
have definitely come to the right place to play. A wide variety
of clubs offers all kinds of music for all types of crowds.
