It's South Africa’s perfect fairytale
of a small-town girl who leaves home to become a Hollywood star.
Americans have voted her the woman with the best smile in Hollywood.
She has already received a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Golden Globe
for best actress and a Silver Bear from the Berlin Film Festival
for her role in Monster. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and
Sciences has granted her the honour of handing out an Oscar at this
year's Academy Awards, and now Charlize Theron has stepped into
the record books to become the first South African ever to pick
up an Oscar for best actress.
Theron won the Best Actress award for her stunning performance
as Aileen Wuornos, a prostitute and serial killer, for which she
had to undergo a total makeover and put on nearly 13kg – a
breakthrough role that saw her swap her glamorous beauty for the
weather-beaten looks of the tough roadside prostitute.
"I'm going to thank everybody in South Africa, my home country.
They are all watching tonight. And I'm bringing this home next week."
With these few words Charlize Theron let the world know on Oscar
night that she is proud to be a South African.
Charlize Theron was born in Benoni, South Africa, on the 7th of
August 1975. Her father Charles worked on the family's road-construction
business, which mother Gerda took over after his death in 1990.
Gerda shot her husband Charlie in self-defence after he arrived
home one evening in a drunken state wanting to kill her and daughter
Charlize.
Charlize Theron is a former model-turned-actress whose stunning
presence in film and on magazine covers have men in awe. She has
an amazing physical presence and an inexplicable sexiness about
her. She's a beautiful actress who epitomizes class and sexiness.
Her big break came from her role in 2 Days in the Valley, where
she had an infamous fight scene with.
"It's a great story: the ugly duckling becomes the belle
of the ball," said noted Hollywood columnist Army Archerd who
interviewed red carpet arrivals at the 76th Annual Academy Awards.
