The first thing I remember about golf when introduced to the game
as a youngster living in Namibia, was that there was no logic in
calling a green a green. This was during the late seventies when
I tagged along for the first time to watch my dad and a few of his
friends blunder their way down the local "golf course"
– fairways were "clearings" rid of obstructing Camel
Thorn trees with the grass about ankle height, "kept"
with a borrowed tractor from the nearest farm; tees were heaps of
sand with flat tops, compacted and soaked in old car engine oil;
"greens" consisted of dry riverbed sand with a sunken
metal pipe marking the hole; and once you're on the green, a sort
of run-way of about a metre in width was cleared along which you
were meant to put. I believe nothing much has changed since then,
except maybe that the golf course now has its own tractor.
Fortunately, South Africa offers the perfect backdrop to this
gentlemen's sport. It boasts more than 500 courses and many of the
best are concentrated in the Western Cape and along the verdant
Garden Route, aptly described as a golfer's "Garden of Eden".
Combined with great weather conditions nearly all-year round, breathtaking
coastlines, spectacular wine farms, world-class restaurants and
the unparalleled beauty and magical appeal of Cape Town, the Western
Cape is one of the best golfing destinations in the world. Coupled
with this is an African experience of note with the added bonus
of serious value for money to make a golfing visit to the Western
Cape a worthwhile holiday break. Apart from a first-class golf experience,
packaged golf tours can include a variety of special interest activities
such as wildlife, cuisine, culture, history, and even health and
wellness. Most golf resorts situated in the most idyllic settings
boast luxury spas for an all-inclusive experience for golfing widows.
As most serious golfers will tell you though, it's in the game,
not the view. But why compromise if you can have the best of both
worlds. Where else can you tee off with a picture-perfect backdrop
– including Table Mountain – on some of the finest golf
courses in the world designed by professionals such as Jack Nicklaus
and Tom Weiskopf from the United States of America, or even local
legends such as Gary Player and Ernie Els?
